Cleopatra (69-30 AD) was an Egyptian queen, the last pharaoh of the Ptolomaic dynasty. She was daughter of Ptolemy XII and she ruled with her two brother-husbands, Ptolemy XIII and Ptolemy XIV, both of whom she had killed. She claimed her son Caesarion was fathered by Julius Caesar, who had become her lover after entering Egypt in 48 AD in pursuit of Pompey. She was with Caesar in Rome when he was assassinated; she then returned to Egypt to install her son on the throne. She lured Mark Antony, Caesar’s heir, into marriage, inviting the wrath of Octavian (later Augustus), whose sister Antony had earlier wed. Octavian declared war on Cleopatra and Antony and defeated their joint forces at the Battle of Actium (31 AD). Antony committed suicide and, after a failed attempt to beguile Octavian, so did Cleopatra, killing herself by means of an asp bite in 30 AD.

Gentle Mother, font of mercy, save our sons from war, we pray. Stay the swords and stay the arrows, let them know a better day. Gentle Mother, strength of women, help our daughters through this fray. Soothe the wrath and tame the fury, teach us all a kinder way. Gentle Mother, font of mercy, save our sons from war, we pray. Stay the swords and stay the arrows, let them know a better day.

The wound, the fire… he’s done.

“I could keep you safe,” he rasped. “They’re all afraid of me. No one would hurt you again, or I’d kill them.” He yanked her closer, and for a moment she thought he meant to kiss her. He was too strong to fight. She closed her eyes, wanting it to be over, but nothing happened. “Still can’t bear to look, can you?” she heard him say. He gave her arm a hard wrench, pulling her around and shoving her down onto the bed. “I’ll have that song. Florian and Jonquil, you said.” His dagger was out, poised at her throat. “Sing, little bird. Sing for your little life.”

Some instinct made her lift her hand and cup his cheek with her fingers. The room was
too dark for her to see him, but she could feel the stickiness of the blood, and a wetness that was not blood. “Little bird,” he said once more, his voice raw and harsh as steel on stone. Then he rose from the bed. Sansa heard cloth ripping, followed by the softer sound of retreating footsteps.
When she crawled out of bed, long moments later, she was alone. She found his cloak on the floor, twisted up tight, the white wool stained by blood and fire. The sky outside was darker by then, with only a few pale green ghosts dancing against the stars. A chill wind was blowing, banging the shutters. Sansa was cold. She shook out the torn cloak and huddled beneath it on the floor, shivering.

A fountain of burning jade rose from the river, the blast so bright he had to shield his eyes. Plumes of fire thirty and forty feet high danced upon the waters, crackling and hissing. For a few moments they washed out the screams. There were hundreds in the water, drowning or burning or doing a little of both. Do you hear them shrieking, Stannis? Do you see them burning? This is your work as much as mine.

“So me and Viggo get in behind the camera so that when they turn around and they’re looking, at least they’re looking at someone they know and they can kind of… you know, imagine they’re at a wedding. Their wedding. And their friends are there. And then, in one of the takes, they turn around and I’m like ‘Yay’… and Viggo GRABS me and kisses me hard on the mouth. I mean like I’ve never been kissed from man nor woman. And… by GOD. I saw stars. And I think I fell in love, for a split second, and then… I felt a bit sick.”
